Fact or fiction: Botox myths
Many of our patients continually enjoy more youthful, energetic profiles as a result of the amazing effects of Botox. Botox is one of the most popular and well-known cosmetic procedures in the world, with about 7.5 million people in the United States get Botox injections for a range of cosmetic and medical reasons each year.
Despite its popularity and widespread use, we still hear a lot of really wild things people have “learned” about Botox from their friends, pop culture, and even the media. In this post, we’ll break down some of the best Botox myths we hear often and try to shine a little light on the truth behind them.
1. Botox is addictive
To be absolutely clear, there are no addictive properties or chemicals in Botox injectors. Botox is totally safe, proven, and effectively prevents the signs of aging. Some patients do choose to have regular Botox treatments about every 3 to 6 months, though, because the effects of Botox injections are not permanent. Dr. Courtney will recommend the Botox treatment schedule that will have you looking fabulous for years to come!
2. The results of Botox are instant
You’ll see quick results from Botox injections, but they don’t happen right away. You should start to notice improvements near the injection site within a few days. After about a week, you’ll start to see more definitive results set in. Botox takes a little bit of time to relax and reduce facial muscle movement, which helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and deep lines. Amazingly, it also prevents any additional lines or wrinkles from forming.
3. Botox will take away your facial expressions
This myth originates from the hundreds of punchlines about Botox in comedy movies, standups, and late-night talk shows, but it isn’t true in the slightest. Dr. Courtney’s team will skillfully maintain the expressions that make you “you,” while giving you a more youthful look overall!
4. Botox injections are painful
People have varying comfort levels when it comes to needles, but most patients at our Houston practice are surprised at how little discomfort they experience with injectables. Special Injectors and topical anesthetics usually make it so that you’ll barely feel a pinch.
5. Botox is only for women
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox injections have been the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment for several years, and it’s in no way a treatment designed solely for women. In fact, in 2017, about 1 in 5 people who had a Botox injection were male. Men and women are both invited to experience the incredible benefits of Botox!
