What is nipple repair?

Nipple repair is a procedure designed to enhance and improve the beauty of your breasts or chest. The nipple itself may be less attractive than you would like it to be, whether it’s too long, too bumpy, or puckered inward. Some patients may want to address the areola, the colored tissue that surrounds the nipple, to make it smaller and more appealing. Nipple repair includes both the areola and the nipple itself.

Why have nipple repair surgery?

If you’re one of the many women who are bothered by the appearance of your nipples, you have the right to get a look that brings you greater joy and more confidence. A custom nipple repair will create a more attractive size, shape, and structure, so your nipples look beautifully balanced. Dr. Courtney is a breast surgeon in Houston who is often called upon to perform this custom surgery, either as a stand-alone procedure or combined with a breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery time is minimal, with most women able to return to work or other activities within a day or two. You may experience swelling, but generally, the surgery involves few side effects or significant discomfort. You must ensure a highly-skilled breast surgeon performs your nipple repair so the results meet your expectations.

Types of Nipple Repairs and procedures

There are a number of different nipple repair procedures a patient can choose from, depending on their specific needs and physical concerns. Dr. Courtney will sit down with you to discuss your concerns and expectations, and get an understanding of how you would like your nipples to look. From there, he will decide which procedure is needed to give you the results you want: nipples that make you feel attractive, secure, and confident.

Areola reduction

Some areolas can be spread out across the breasts, and some patients who have lost a significant amount of weight might find their areolas are stretched. After breastfeeding, areolas can sometimes change in ways a patient feels are undesirable. A custom nipple repair surgery for the areola will focus on reducing the size of the areola to a smaller, shapely circle that more closely surrounds the nipple.

Under local anesthesia, Dr. Courtney will make a circular incision along the border of your existing areola and remove the excess tissue, creating a smaller areola around the nipple. These procedures are very straightforward, done under local anesthesia. They each take about an hour, with minimal recovery time. Patients usually report the experience involves only mild discomfort, and the results are permanent.

Real Patient

Enhancing the beauty of the nipples themselves

For the nipple itself, a repair can be done to correct inverted nipples, nipples that point or pucker inward, or lie flat instead of pointing outward. Dr. Courtney will make an incision, lift, and then re-stitch the tissue to allow the nipple to point outward in an attractive, appealing way. Some patients may find their nipples to be overly long or irregularly shaped. To correct this, Dr. Courtney will make a small incision at the base of the nipple and remove excess nipple tissue and help to shape the nipple into a more desirable form.

Some patients, both male and female, experience puffy nipples. Puffy nipples are characterized by a swollen, enlarged nipple area. This can be caused by a number of things, including hormonal imbalances, excess body fat, or in some cases, glandular issues. Dr. Courtney will discuss different options for this medical procedure to remove the excess fat and transform the puffy nipples into flat, more attractive nipples.
