What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an injectable drug prescribed to promote weight loss. The medication, which was originally created for type 2 diabetes management, is an effective treatment to help adults who are overweight or obese keep their weight under control.

Benefits of Semaglutide

Semaglutide can offer significant benefits for individuals who are struggling with weight loss. A few of the primary benefits of Semaglutide include:

  • Helps you lose a significant amount of weight
  • Helps to prevent overeating
  • Lowers your blood sugar level
  • Helps to create a slimmer, more youthful-looking figure
  • Reduces the risk of certain health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, and heart attack
  • Improved self-confidence and self-image
  • Improved mobility and athletic performance
  • Increased wardrobe options
  • Safe, FDA-approved medication

How Does Semaglutide Work?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. When the medication is injected, it mimics a hormone called GLP-1, which is released in the gut when we eat. In high doses, the GLP-1 hormone interacts with parts of the brain that are responsible for suppressing the appetite and making us feel full. So, when a patient is treated with Semaglutide, it prevents them from feeling hungry as often, which makes it much easier to avoid overeating. For optimal results, Semaglutide treatment needs to be combined with a healthy diet and exercise routine.

GLP-1 also promotes increased insulin production, which reduces blood sugar levels. For this reason, Semaglutide has been a popular treatment for type 2 diabetes for many years.

What Should I Expect During the Treatment?

Before you’re prescribed Semaglutide, the first step will be to sit down for a consultation with Dr. Courtney. During this meeting, he’ll answer any questions you have and discuss the treatment with you to determine whether or not you’re a good candidate. If you and the doctor decide that Semaglutide is a good fit for your needs, he’ll get you set up with a prescription and show you how to properly use the medication.

Semaglutide is meant to be injected once per week in whatever dosage you’re prescribed. The medication should be injected under the skin of your stomach, upper arm, or thigh, and you’ll want to rotate injection sites for each dosage. Once you’ve started taking the medication, Dr. Courtney will want to check in with you regularly to confirm that it’s working for you and, if necessary, adjust your dosage.

Am I a Candidate for Semaglutide?

Adults who are overweight or obese and looking to lose weight could be good candidates for Semaglutide. To be an ideal candidate for the treatment, you should:

  • Be in generally good physical and mental health
  • Have a BMI above 30 or above 27 with a weight-related medical condition, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes
  • Have no history of gallbladder disease, medullary thyroid cancer, or pancreatitis
  • Be willing and able to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine
  • Have realistic expectations for the treatment
