Over time, gravity, sun damage, environmental toxins, and natural aging cause your face to begin developing wrinkles, creases, and fine lines. You may see crow’s feet around your eyes, forehead creases, and frown lines appearing between your eyebrows. While these effects are a natural part of the aging process, modern non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment options can help make them much less noticeable.

What causes wrinkles?

Because the facial skin is continuously exposed to sun, wind, heat, cold, and environmental toxins that advance the aging process, your face is usually the first place to show the signs of aging. Even if you have regularly worn sunscreen and avoided smoking, you may begin to appear older or tired even when you feel your best.

These signs of aging are categorized in two ways:

Dynamic Wrinkles

Some wrinkles and fine lines appear only during facial expressions. These are called “dynamic wrinkles”. As your skin begins to produce less collagen and elastin, these wrinkles become more pronounced and visible. Common dynamic wrinkles include frown lines, crow’s feet, and lines around your mouth. Dynamic wrinkles are the primary target of BOTOX and other neuromodulators, as they help specific facial muscles relax and stop forming these unwanted wrinkles.

Static Wrinkles

The gradual effects of gravity, age, loss of facial volume, and constant facial expressions can also cause some wrinkles to become etched into your skin. These wrinkles appear all the time and are called “static wrinkles”. Static wrinkles can be reduced with dermal fillers, an injectable treatment that can be performed at the same time as your BOTOX injections.

How do neuromodulators like BOTOX work?

The movements made by your face during facial expressions require the coordinated contraction of many different facial muscles. These contractions are signaled by the nervous system, which communicates via nerve signals to move each muscle in a synchronized way. BOTOX, Jeuveau, and Dysport are all injectable neuromodulators that interrupt the signal between the nerve cell and its target muscle.

When placed precisely in specific areas of the face, they prevent muscular contraction and the resulting crease from appearing on your face. This treatment causes your skin to appear smooth and youthful by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Courtney customizes each treatment to your personal goals and desires. You may just want to soften the appearance of aging, or you might want more comprehensive rejuvenation. In any case, Dr. Courtney’s skill can help you achieve beautiful, natural-looking results.

Preventing new wrinkles

An added benefit (and favorite of our younger patients) is that BOTOX also helps prevent the deepening of existing wrinkles and the formation of new wrinkles. It is an ideal preventative maintenance treatment to help maintain a more youthful look for years or decades into the future.

Neuromodulators + dermal fillers for comprehensive facial rejuvenation

Many patients decide to combine their BOTOX treatment with dermal fillers for more comprehensive, overall facial rejuvenation. While BOTOX will stop the muscle contractions and development of wrinkles, dermal fillers can smooth other facial areas. For deeper wrinkles that occur across the forehead and between the eyebrows, the combination of dermal fillers and BOTOX can leave you looking younger, refreshed, and more attractive in just minutes.

BOTOX: What to expect

Your procedure will begin in our facility, where you will be immediately greeted and made to feel comfortable by our award-winning staff. After carefully studying the natural architecture of your face, Dr. Courtney will measure and make pencil markings for precise placement of the injections, giving you optimal and natural-looking outcomes.

During your treatment, you will have several small injections in different areas of your face. While some patients describe a slight burning sensation for just a moment with each injection, most patients are pleasantly surprised at the ease of the procedure and tell us the sensation is very tolerable. For added comfort, Dr. Courtney offers anesthetic cream and ice to numb your skin before the injections.

The entire procedure takes just a few minutes, quick enough to be completed on your lunch break. You can expect to return to your regular daily activities immediately following your BOTOX injections. You may experience slight redness, swelling, and bruising immediately after the injections, though these generally disappear shortly after.

Your results

You may notice some initial results within the first few hours, but it usually takes 7-10 days for BOTOX to have its full effect. The injections last about 3-4 months, and most patients return three to four times per year to maintain their renewed, youthful look and prevent future wrinkles from developing.

Specialized BOTOX injections

Dr. Courtney performs BOTOX injections for specialized face and body issues, including:

  • Smooth the “jelly roll” (beneath the eyes)
  • For TMJ (teeth grinding)
  • Smooth vertical neck bands
  • Treat migraines
  • Resolve excessive sweating
  • Smooth smile lines (“chintox”)

Your BOTOX provider matters

Your face is the most visible aspect of your unique identity, and you should entrust its care to a surgeon with extraordinary ability. While there are small-time spa settings that offer BOTOX, these are often staffed by injectors with little understanding of facial anatomy and experience providing comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Courtney has a vast knowledge of facial anatomy, including the muscular and nervous systems, which is essential in evaluating the best and most effective placement for your injectable treatments. If you’re looking for beautiful, natural-looking results, don’t compromise. Call us today and let us help you on your road to a new, more beautiful you.
