What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as “eyelid surgery”, is a surgical procedure that addresses the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure involves removing the excess skin tissues, muscles, and fat deposits making your eyelids droop and sag. Besides the obvious cosmetic benefits, blepharoplasty may also improve your vision by removing sagging folds of skin. Dr. Courtney specializes in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries to improve your appearance and functionality.

Benefits of blepharoplasty

  • Removes the drooping skin from upper eyelids
  • Reduces bagginess in the lower eyelids
  • May improve peripheral vision
  • Relaxes the forehead and eyebrows
  • Helps provide a refreshed appearance

You’re a candidate if you:

  • Have sagging skin around your eyes
  • Have bags under the eyes
  • Have vision troubles because of eyelid puffiness
  • Are in generally good physical and mental health
  • Have realistic expectations from the procedure
  • Don’t have underlying conditions that affect the surgical results
  • Are a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking

Blepharoplasty: The procedure

Your blepharoplasty procedure will be performed in Dr. Courtney’s surgical center in Houston. It’s an outpatient procedure that concludes within an hour or two. The specific details will depend on Dr. Courtney’s curated treatment plan, but the steps generally involve:

  • Anesthesia: Our anesthesiologist will deliver local or general anesthesia, depending on the procedure details. If local anesthesia, you can also ask for IV sedation to calm your mental anxieties.
  • Upper eyelids: Dr. Courtney makes a small incision on the upper eyelid to remove the excess skin, muscles, and fat. Some of the tissues may be repositioned elsewhere.
  • Lower eyelids: Dr. Courtney makes a small incision on the inside of the lower eyelids or underneath the lower eyelashes. He removes the unwanted fat tissues and some of the excess skin tissues contributing to the bagginess.
  • Closing: Once the tissues are repositioned and modified, Dr. Courtney carefully sutures the incisions to ensure optimal recovery and healing.

Blepharoplasty recovery

After a short monitoring period in the recovery room, you can have someone drive you back home. You might experience mild swelling, discomfort, and bruising around your eyes for a few days — the side effects are temporary and manageable with pain medications. You might also experience blurry vision and light sensitivity for a few days. If you wear contact lenses, you’ll have to switch to glasses for two weeks. The entire recovery process should take one to two weeks.
