What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a surgical procedure for the auricle, i.e., the outer part of the ear. The auricle consists of the folds of skin-covered cartilages that develop a few years after you’re born. Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the auricle to change the shape, size, or positioning of your ears for structural or aesthetic reasons.

Otoplasty Techniques

  • Augmentation: If you have small ears or under-developed ears, you can get an ear augmentation to enhance the auricle size.
  • Pinning: If your ears stick out too far from your head, you can get an ear pinning procedure to draw them closer to your head.
  • Reduction: If you have macrotia (large ears), you can get an ear reduction to reduce your ear size.

The Benefits of Otoplasty

  • Provides the optimal ear size, positioning, and shape
  • Improves overall self-confidence
  • Improves overall facial harmony and proportionality
  • Results that last a lifetime
  • Simple procedure that concludes within an hour or two

Am I a Candidate?

  • Are unhappy with the shape, size, or positioning of your ears
  • Have abnormally shaped ears due to trauma, accidents, or genetic issues
  • Have fully-developed ears, generally over 5 years of age
  • Are in overall good physical and mental health
  • Are a nonsmoker or willing to stop smoking before the procedure

Otoplasty: The Procedure

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that concludes within two hours, depending on the complexity of your specific case. While the specific details may differ, the following is a broad overview of the procedure.

  • Anesthesia: You might receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
  • Incisions: Dr. Courtney will make incisions on the back of the ear or along the inner folds.
  • Repositioning: Dr. Courtney will reposition and manipulate the cartilage and tissues. Depending on your cosmetic goals and concerns, this step might involve removing unwanted cartilage, folding and shaping the existing cartilage, or grafting of cartilage to augment the ears.
  • Closing: Dr. Courtney will suture the incisions carefully to ensure optimal healing without visible scars.

Your Recovery

Surgical dressings will be placed over your ears for a few days. You must avoid scratching your ears or sleeping sideways. You might experience some swelling, redness, and bruising, but these side-effects will dissipate in a few days. You’ll also have to wear a headband for a few weeks. Most patients can resume most normal activities within a week and return to work within a week or two.
