MTF breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to help patients achieve a more feminine appearance, giving them the breasts and proportions they want in order to help complete their transition.

The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients go under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and the procedure takes about two hours to complete.

Male-to-Female Breast Augmentation

Male-to-female (or MTF) transgender breast augmentation is a procedure Dr. Courtney provides that helps patients to appear as their true selves to the world, aligning their inner selves with what others see.

Transgender women may need breast augmentation to achieve the outward appearance that reflects their identity. This allows a woman to affirm her gender identity and feel more comfortable in her own skin.

Dr. Courtney understands that this procedure is about more than a physical change, but is an affirming step for a trans woman toward becoming the woman she is within. MTF breast augmentation is essential for many women to feel like themselves, and improve their sexual confidence and quality of life.

Implants

To create the shape and size of the breasts, Dr. Courtney will place and insert silicone or saline implants. Silicone implants tend to feel more natural, as most transgender women have a relatively small amount of breast tissue. Saline implants are firmer and have a smoother surface. The saline implants are rounder and feel more fluid when they are touched.

To insert the implants, there are different possible points of incision. Incisions may be along the bottom of the areola or in the armpit. If the patient needs a fairly large implant to fit her anatomy, then the incision may be in the bottom fold-line of the breast. This allows Dr. Courtney to insert a bigger implant.

Fat Transfer

A fat transfer can be a good option for a patient who is looking for a smaller breast augmentation. Dr. Courtney will first determine which area on the body to remove fat from. This varies from patient to patient. Once the fat is removed, Dr. Courtney will place it both below and inside the tissue that surrounds the natural breast area. This enhances their shape and size.

Recovery

After surgery, a compression bandage is placed around the breasts for about one week, until Dr. Courtney meets with the patient for their follow-up appointment. This improves patient comfort and also helps to reduce swelling and bruising.

Pain from the procedure is different for every patient. Most patients report pain greatly decreasing after the first one or two weeks and need no further pain medication.

In a month or less, patients will see a significant decrease in swelling. By 6-9 weeks post-surgery, patients can expect swelling to be gone completely.

Total recovery, including scaring, takes six months to a year. During recovery, patients who work within the office can return to work 2-3 weeks after surgery. Patients who work in active positions or do heavy labor should usually wait until 4-6 weeks have passed. Walking or other lower body exercise can be resumed within two weeks. Heavy exercise, such as running, weight lifting or other strenuous activity, can be resumed after six weeks.
