Liposuction

Liposuction in Houston, TX

Even the most dedicated dieters have “problem areas” of stubborn fat. Whether caused by weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, age, or genetics, these pockets persist despite targeted exercises. Often, the only way to eliminate stubborn fat is a surgical procedure called liposuction.

Liposuction (also referred to as “Lipo” or “liposculpting,”) slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing localized fat. The most common areas for liposuction include:

  • Thighs
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper and lower arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Cheeks, chin and neck

Practicing in Houston, TX at one of the largest and most advanced plastic surgery centers in the nation, Dr. Courtney is a highly-skilled plastic surgeon who can re-contour your physique using state-of-the-art liposuction technology. Is liposuction right for me?

Today, non-surgical and surgical options exist to treat problematic, fatty areas. Patients who are unable or do not want to undergo surgery may consider a non-invasive approach to fat removal, such as CoolSculpting, which has been proven to reduce unwanted fat without the need for surgery.

However, if you are seeking a more dramatic, immediate, and permanent outcome, liposuction has proven the most potent at combatting stubborn fat. Men and women at a stable, healthy weight who battle unwanted bulges, such as love handles, double chin, or a muffin top, use liposuction to give them a sleek, new silhouette.  Liposuction can also be a successful treatment for men with enlarged breasts. Additionally, if an area feels disproportionate to the rest of your body, liposuction effectively restores balance. If skin has loosened in the treatment area, liposuction combined with skin excision will tighten the area after fat removal.

Liposuction should not be used as a means of weight loss or as an alternative to diet or exercise. Since changes in your weight can affect your results, Dr. Courtney recommends that you consider liposuction when you are at or near the desired body weight that you plan to maintain.

What can I expect during my consultation?

Prior to liposuction surgery, you will have a private consultation with Dr. Courtney and his patient care coordinator to discuss your individual aesthetic needs and concerns. After thoroughly reviewing your medical history, Dr. Courtney will conduct a physical exam to assess your body’s natural architecture and balance, and he will also discuss your lifestyle and personal habits. Carefully listening to your concerns and goals, Dr. Courtney will discuss the best surgical techniques and options available to help you meet your individual needs. He shares before and after photos for visual reference.

Your consultation with Dr. Courtney will be a highly-personalized and individualized experience. Through open dialogue with his patients, Dr. Courtney ensures that his patients understand the procedure, any risks associated, recovery time and activity limitations, as well as expected outcome and benefits. He welcomes any patient questions.  Providing the best and safest level of care is of utmost importance to Dr. Courtney, so please allow an hour to an hour and a half for your initial consultation appointment and expect a thorough discussion and assessment.

How will my liposuction surgery be performed?

After being greeted by our award-winning staff in our state-of-the-art surgical facility, Dr. Courtney will begin the preparations for surgery. First, he marks the areas of your body for contouring. You will then meet with one of our highly-trained, board-certified anesthesiologists, who will administer general anesthesia and accompany you during surgery.

Dr. Courtney conducts surgery in our AAAHC-certified ambulatory surgery center (ASC) rather than a hospital operating room. Our ASC far exceeds the health and safety standards most hospitals struggle to achieve. Studies reveal that ASCs have half the infection rate hospitals endure. While you’re under anesthesia, Dr. Courtney makes a small incision and inserts a cannula—a thin, blunt needle designed to minimize cutting of veins that permeate the fat layer. The cannula carefully breaks up the fats cells which are sucked up through the cannula’s opening. Dr. Courtney meticulously sculpts the targeted area(s) until he arrives at the desired results and contouring. He closes incisions with sutures. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals, Dr. Courtney may treat several areas, requiring several small incisions.

The fat collected from liposuction is generally disposed of after surgery. However, it is becoming much more common for patients to re-use their body’s natural fat cells to either restore or provide added volume to certain areas of their body. This procedure is known as “fat transfer.” Surgeons take the newly removed fat, purify and liquefy it in sterile conditions, and re-inject it in the breasts (augmentation), buttocks (for a Brazilian Butt Lift), or face for fullness.

What will my recovery from liposuction be like?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure with most patients returning home to rest the same day. When you awake from your procedure, you will have a compression garment in place to minimize swelling and support your body as it heals. Before leaving our surgery center, Dr. Courtney will detail how the compression bandage should be worn. He will discuss the healing process, including expected drainage from your incision sites.

Pain during healing is generally minimal, but Dr. Courtney will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort during the first few days. You are likely to have some swelling and bruising in the treatment area(s), but these will subside over the next week or two. Recovery is different for every patient. While most return to work and perform light activities within the first week or so of surgery, others require more down-time. It is important to start walking as much as possible after returning home from surgery, though exercise and strenuous activity should be withheld until Dr. Courtney’s clearance, typically around 6 weeks.  Dr. Courtney will give you instructions on how to care for yourself after surgery, and it is important to follow these recommendations to minimize swelling and maximize your results. Your surgical scars will gradually fade over the next several months.

Liposuction is a safe procedure that provides immediate and dramatic results to your body’s shape and size that otherwise may not be attainable through diet and exercise alone. While some of the re-shaping effects may be immediately seen, the area(s) will remain swollen for several weeks as healing continues.

It typically takes 3 to 6 months for the contouring results to be noticeable. Though the contouring effects of Liposuction are long-lasting, with fat cells permanently removed from the targeted area(s), maintaining your slim lines requires a healthy lifestyle, with proper maintenance of your body’s weight, after surgery. Any weight fluctuations may affect your results.
