What Is a Body Lift?
Body lift surgery is most commonly needed after massive weight loss. Patients that have undergone bariatric surgery often lose a significant amount of weight rapidly, leaving behind excess skin. Diet, exercise, and other more traditional weight loss methods, although great for your overall health, can also leave behind extra skin. Fortunately, body lifts target this exact issue.
A body lift is a surgical procedure that aims to remove extra skin and recontour the body after weight loss. This procedure is focused on skin removal and tissue tightening, not fat reduction. Experts designed this procedure to improve your body’s appearance after weight loss. A body lift improves the shape and tone of the treated areas by tightening and removing excess skin.
We will work with you to develop a customized plan for your body based on your unique needs. Commonly treated areas include:
- Lower back
You can also choose to combine a body lift with other post-weight loss body contouring treatments, including liposuction or an arm lift.
Do I Need a Body Lift After Weight Loss?
A body lift isn’t always needed after weight loss. The skin is stretchy and elastic, so as your body changes size, your skin grows and contracts to accommodate these fluctuations. With small weight changes, the skin can expand or contract sufficiently. More significant fluctuations, like those experienced after bariatric surgery, are harder for the body to adapt to. When patients lose substantial weight, the skin may not contract back to its original size.
We recommend considering body lift surgery if you want to address skin that:
- Is uncomfortable
- Keeps you from wearing certain clothing styles or fits
- Interferes with your ability to exercise or participate in physical activities
- Is unsightly or bothersome
- Develops rashes or odors
Many of our patients decide that a body lift is the completion of their weight loss journey. Removing the excess skin helps them to find motivation and inspiration to continue making healthy choices for their body.

What Happens During a Body Lift in Houston, TX?
During a body lift, we remove a section of skin and tissue from around the entire mid-section. The incision is typically shaped much like a bikini, removing tissue from the abdomen, buttocks, waist, and sides. When we tightly pull the remaining skin, this tightens the abdomen, back, buttocks, and upper thighs.
We will then remove skin and tissue and tighten the remaining tissues. We will often perform liposuction at the same time as a body lift to remove excess fat and create better contours.
After Dr. Courtney is satisfied with your results, he’ll close your incisions. The area is wrapped in compression bandaging to reduce swelling as you heal.
Recovery After a Body Lift
We provide detailed recovery instructions before your procedure so you can prepare for your body lift and arrange for help and time off work as needed.
Many patients will need to spend one to two nights in the hospital after surgery. The rest of your recovery period will happen at home.
We recommend taking at least two weeks off from work. You may need additional time off if you have a strenuous or physically demanding job.
Body Lift in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
Maintaining a healthy and stable weight is essential for maintaining long-lasting results from your procedure. We recommend that patients sustain a healthy diet, exercise often, and enjoy an active lifestyle. Large weight fluctuations may stretch the skin, potentially reversing some of your body lift results.
We often prescribe pain medications to help patients stay comfortable in the first few days after a body lift. Most patients only need prescription pain medication for a few days. After the initial healing period, taking over the counter pain relievers can help, as long as you take them regularly and do not let the pain build up.
Patients will have a long scar, extending around the circumference of the body. This scar is low and is usually hidden under the bikini line. Most patients find that the improvement in their body tone and shape offsets any scarring that may occur. Dr. Courtney uses specialized techniques to minimize scarring.
Body lifts are often paired with liposuction. Removing excess fat can improve your contours after weight loss. Many body lift patients also opt for arm lift surgery to tighten and tone the appearance of the upper arm.
We’ll provide a personalized quote for your procedure during your consultation with Dr. Courtney. Since each procedure is customized, costs can vary significantly from one patient to another.
