What is a Facial Fat Transfer?

A facial fat transfer, also called facial fat grafting,  is a surgical procedure designed for patients who would like to turn back the clock on facial aging with a less invasive approach than a facelift procedure.

During facial fat grafting, excess or unwanted fat cells in a predetermined area of the body are gently removed with a liposuction technique. These cells are purified and then injected into the hollow areas of the face where volume has been lost. A facial fat transfer achieves significant facial rejuvenation with careful, artful facial injection. The result is smoothed, lifted, and beautifully contoured features.

Benefits Of Facial Fat Grafting

A facial fat transfer achieves a range of benefits for patients who would want to achieve renewed contours and a rejuvenated appearance without a facelift. Benefits include the following:

  • Takes years off the face
  • Smoothed lines and wrinkles
  • Full, youthful-looking cheeks
  • Plump volume at the temples and under-eye area and other areas that lose volume
  • A smoother, more youthful contour between the lower eyelids and cheekbones
  • Very minimal scarring
  • No incisions on the face
  • The liposuction performed to harvest fat sculpts and slims the donor area of the body
  • Facial fat transfer is a less invasive surgery than a facelift
  • Achieves better jawline definition
  • Lifts and enhances the cheekbones
  • Achieves contoured, youthful fullness around the nose
  • Results are long-lasting

What Is The Procedure For A Facial Fat Transfer?

As a first step of the procedure, you will have a thoughtful consultation with Dr. Courtney. During this consultation process, you will decide on the area of the body where the fat will be removed. Dr. Courtney will help you select a place where there is excess, unwanted fat that you would like to sculpt and tone. One of the benefits of facial fat grafting is that you will achieve a more toned, lean body at the same time as your face is attractively plumped and smoothed.

During facial fat transfer, fat tissue will be gently removed by liposuction. This fat is cleansed and purified, then injected into your face to smooth wrinkles and creases and restore lost volume.

Recovery After Facial Fat Grafting

Recovery time varies from person to person, as every patient is unique. Generally, patients require one or two weeks off from work and usual activities to get plenty of rest and time to recuperate after the procedure.

Expect to swell and bruise in the facial areas where the fat cells were injected. There will also be bruising and swelling in the area of the body where liposuction was performed. This is more significant during the first several days after your surgery. After the first week, swelling and bruising will begin to subside significantly.

By the two-week mark, most of the swelling will have reduced. You will feel recovered, but the fat tissues will still be settling. Some of the fat cells will be naturally absorbed by your body during the first three or four months after facial fat transfer. This is an expected part of your healing after your surgery and is compensated for during the fat tissue injection process. For your final results to be completely realized and the new fat tissues to settle, it can take up to 6-9 months.

How Long Will My Results Last After Facial Fat Grafting?

Your renewed facial volume and lifted, sculpted facial contours are very long-lasting. The results of a facial fat transfer can provide benefits for a period of years. However, it is important to keep in mind that future signs of aging will appear over the years, causing a diminished result as the aging process naturally continues.

Am I A Candidate For Facial Fat Transfer?

Anyone who would like to achieve facial rejuvenation without a facelift is a possible candidate for a facial fat transfer. Ideal candidates for facial fat grafting should meet the following requirements:

  • Are generally in good physical health
  • Do not smoke, or can stop smoking before and after the procedure
  • Have sufficient fat in other areas of the body to donate for transfer to the face
  • Aren’t ready for a more invasive facial procedure such as a facelift
  • Have realistic expectations for what a facial fat transfer can achieve

FAQ

Will there be scars after facial fat transfer?

Facial fat transfer requires only tiny incisions in the area where liposuction is performed. These heal well and do not cause significant scars. Injections in the face, on the other hand, do not cause scars.

How much of the transferred fat will remain in the face after facial fat grafting?

About 40-60% of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body within the first few months after the procedure. This is expected and compensated for during the procedure.

Is facial fat grafting better than dermal fillers?

To restore lost volume in the face, facial fat transfer is the better choice over dermal fillers. Fat grafting lasts longer than facial fillers and is especially effective around the eyes, in the jawline and cheeks, and in other areas of the face.
