Q&A with Dr. Courtney

Why did you become a plastic surgeon?

During my fellowship, I was fascinated with reconstructive surgery — specifically breast reconstruction. I really connected with patients who were going through a difficult time, and comforting them was so rewarding. I then began treating the patient as a whole.

While I was training at M.D. Anderson and removing cancer daily, I found myself staying to watch the beautiful intricacy of reconstructive surgery. Cutting out cancer can leave a hole, both emotionally and physically. Creating beauty out of something taken from these patients taught me techniques applicable to every part of the body.

After mastering the art of breast reconstruction, I realized that extremely detailed surgery could also be applied to the lighthearted world of cosmetic surgery. This is what led me to cosmetic plastic surgery. I love seeing the confidence and dramatic transformation in my reconstruction and cosmetic patients.

What do you like most about being a plastic surgeon?

I like to see the immediate results after each procedure and the positive effect it has on patients. I enjoy working with my hands and operating from head to toe. I also find the diversity of plastic surgery to be fascinating, as each case is different.

What do you like to do in your leisure time when you are not operating or seeing patients?

I enjoy spending time with my family, quality time creating arts and crafts with my two daughters, and spending time outdoors.

What three words best describe you?

Patient, understanding, and relatable.

Why do patients choose you as their plastic surgeon, and what makes you different and unique?

Patients choose me because I am honest and truly have their best interest at heart. I give my patients realistic, reasonable expectations. I am constantly learning new techniques and strive to provide my patients with the latest procedure options. When patients choose me as their surgeon, I take care of them for life.
